Renewable energy player ACME Group has announced plans to set up its first green hydrogen project in India, selecting Gopalpur in Odisha as the site for the facility. The project will be housed within the Tata Steel Special Economic Zone (Tata SEZ) at the Gopalpur Industrial Estate.
The announcement was made during a ceremonial event marking the launch of five industrial projects in the SEZ, attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, senior government officials, and industry representatives on June 7.
Anil Kumar Taparia, COO of ACME Green Hydrogen SBU, said the collaboration with Tata SEZ aligns with the group’s vision of driving industrial decarbonization. “Odisha’s rapid industrialisation and its strong push for sustainability make it an ideal location. The project is progressing as per schedule to meet its development timeline,” Taparia said.
The facility is expected to produce up to 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually and create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. Production is targeted to begin by 2029, reported ET Manufacturing.
ACME has also partnered with a Japanese firm to offtake the entire output, in a move that supports both India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Japan’s net-zero goals.
The company’s green hydrogen and ammonia projects, especially the landmark facility in Odisha, are central to India’s ambitions for clean energy leadership. With strong international partnerships, significant investment, and a clear focus on decarbonizing industry, ACME is set to play a pivotal role in the global green hydrogen economy.
