In a significant step towards decarbonising aviation, NTPC Green Energy Limited has joined forces with Honeywell to explore the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in India. The partnership aims to leverage captured carbon emissions and green hydrogen to produce cleaner jet fuel, reinforcing India’s energy security and commitment to climate goals.
Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two organisations will assess the feasibility of producing SAF using carbon dioxide captured from NTPC’s thermal power plants, combined with green hydrogen generated at NTPC Green’s upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, according to Manufacturing Today.
“SAF production is a key component of our Green Hydrogen Hub. We expect the aviation sector’s SAF blending mandates to catalyse early investments in green hydrogen projects,” said DMR Panda, Executive Director (Green Hydrogen), NTPC Ltd.
The initiative aims to support airlines in meeting their emission reduction targets and accelerate India’s transition to low-carbon aviation. The joint feasibility study is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Honeywell will bring to the table its technological expertise in sustainable fuel production through its UOP business unit. “We are proud to partner with NTPC Green to advance India’s journey towards cleaner skies and carbon neutrality,” said Ranjit Kulkarni, Vice President and General Manager, Energy and Sustainability Solutions, Honeywell India.
This collaboration is also aligned with India’s broader ambition to become a global hub for SAF production and export, positioning the country as a key player in the green energy economy of the future.
