The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) reaffirmed its commitment to advancing India’s Green Ports Mission on World Hydrogen Day, underscoring the adoption of clean fuels for a sustainable maritime future.
In a message posted on X, the Ministry highlighted its ongoing efforts to promote hydrogen-based technologies across vessels, ports, and logistics operations. The statement read, “On #WorldHydrogenDay, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing India’s Green Ports Mission through the adoption of clean fuels for a sustainable tomorrow. Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi, MoPSW is actively promoting hydrogen-based technologies to power vessels, ports, and logistics, paving the way for a cleaner and greener maritime sector.”
World Hydrogen Day and Fuel Cell Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy source, as well as the versatile applications of fuel cells. The occasion serves to highlight hydrogen’s role in combating climate change, enhancing energy security, and driving environmental sustainability.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has also reiterated that hydrogen represents both the fuel of the future and a key driver of India’s energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental responsibility. He noted that India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to produce five million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, backed by a policy framework and an investment of Rs 19,700 crore under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. “Every electrolyser manufacturer in the world is coming here because they see potential,” he remarked.
Puri also referenced ongoing projects such as Indian Oil’s green hydrogen plant in Panipat and Tokyo Energy’s bids in Visakhapatnam, pointing out that the declining costs of hydrogen production in India reflect rising investor confidence and technological progress. He further cited the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s green ammonia tenders, noting the export potential of green ammonia due to its logistical advantages over natural gas.
The Union Cabinet had approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission on January 4, 2023, with an allocation of Rs 19,744 crore. The mission’s goal is to position India as a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, targeting an annual output of five million metric tonnes by 2030.
